Description from the seller
Pair of Viking Bronze Cross Pendants
Circa 11th century AD
A fine pair of bronze cross pendants: the first with a central lozenge-shaped panel and four projecting arms terminating in rounded lobes, decorated with circular recesses containing pale inlays, with a suspension loop above; and the second with pointed arms decorated with raised circular bosses, with a suspension loop at the top.
The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods.
Size: 5.5cm x 4cm x 0.8cm (set of 2)
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
