AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare Viking Age Amulet Pendant - The Sun Cross of Odin
Circa 10th-11th century AD
A rare pair of terracotta bulla seals, each with a circular body and a flat impressed face. The first bears a standing draped figure holding a long staff or sceptre in the left hand. The composition is enclosed within a circular border. The second is impressed with a geometric device comprising a rectangular frame divided by intersecting diagonal lines.
The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods.
Size: 2.8cm x 2.2cm x 0.5cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
