Viking Bronze Open-type Bracelet with Sun Symbol
Circa 10th-11th century AD
An exceptional Viking bronze cuff bracelet with a broad, flat band, open at the back and terminating in squared ends. The central section is decorated with a raised rectangle enclosing a circular solar emblem surrounded by punched dots. The band is embellished with longitudinal mouldings and finely incised herringbone borders, extending towards the terminals, which are decorated with converging geometric patterns.
The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods.
