AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Viking Group of Bronze Fittings and an Amulet
Circa 5th-7th century AD
An interesting group of three Viking bronze objects: a radiate-headed brooch with an elongated body with lateral projections terminating in rounded knobs, a narrow neck and a semi-circular head with five radiating terminals; a belt fitting consisting of a rectangular openwork frame and a circular attachment eye, connected by a tapering neck; and a stylised drop-shaped amulet with an elongated, curved body, a hooked terminal and a suspension loop.
The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods.
Size: 3cm x 2.5cm x 0.5cm (set of 3)
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
