Painted in 1929, just before the Wall Street crash, Chop Suey depicts the interior of a New York restaurant where several figures are seated around tables.
The title refers to chop suey, a Sino-American dish that was very popular in the United States in the early 20th century.
At that time, restaurants offering this dish became popular meeting places in the major American cities.
Hopper drew particularly on his observations of restaurants in New York, a city in which he lived most of his life.
A work sold for nearly 92 million dollars!
The work came from the prestigious collection of American businessman Barney A. Ebsworth.
The painting was sold to a private collector in 2018.
P.S.: The wooden frame is not included in the sale, but it helps visualize the final appearance. Thank you.
Carefully packed and protected shipments, with insurance and delivery requiring a signature.
