atelier gesture - Bench - Oak

Oak bench, designed in a modern, organic style. The legs pass through the sculpted seat, barely making contact with it. The seat is supported by underlying crossbars that connect the legs. Crossbars are connected by mortise-and-tenon joints and tied up with wooden wedges.

Each component was cut and shaped using traditional hand tools, supplemented by a few portable power tools.
I selected oak with a particularly wild grain pattern and knots. Certain imperfections have been filled with wax. A hard-wax oil is used for the finish. The legs are fitted with screw-in glides. The piece is shipped in a custom-built cardboard and wood crate.
