This Belgian Art Deco faience vase by Charles Catteau, decorated with stylised butterflies, foliage and flowers in beige and brown, bears the D1847 décor number and measures 30 cm high by 20 cm wide.
Description from the seller
This exceptional Art Deco glazed earthenware vase comes from the famous Belgian manufacture Boch Freres Keramis, created directly under the artistic direction of Charles Catteau. The object features a superb bulbous ovoid shape, magnified by a particularly rich stylized floral and faunal decoration. The polychrome composition showcases giant exotic butterflies with spread wings nestled within dense foliage and fully bloomed flowers, executed in a warm palette of ochre yellow, brick orange, chocolate brown, and shades of green. The cloisonne work is remarkable, emphasizing each element with a fine brown raised outline against a delicately crazed cream glazed background. Underneath the base, the piece bears the original black factory stamp of the Keramis brand depicting the wolf, accompanied by the handwritten gold pattern number D 1847, as well as the handwritten capital letter M which historically certifies the application of the specific textured matte enamel finish from the creative workshop. The dimensions of this Charles Catteau masterpiece are 30 cm in total height with a maximum diameter at the belly of approximately 20 cm. The individual weight of this massive vase is 2200 g, which also represents the total weight of this lot. The condition of preservation is excellent, as the structure is perfectly intact, free from any cracks, chips, or restorations. One simply notes very slight superficial marks and tiny glaze wear entirely due to age, which confirm the authenticity of this high-end collectible piece.
