Description from the seller
"Rethondes" is a well-known French brand name and signature for high-quality Art Deco lighting from the 1920s and 1930s. The objects bearing this signature are highly loved among collectors of antique glass and wrought iron work.
This are the main facts about Rethondes Art Deco:
1. The link with glass factory Degué
Although the lamps are signed "Rethondes", they were produced by the famous French glass factory Verreries d'Art Degué (or La Cristallerie Degué). This factory was founded in 1926 in Compiègne by David Guéron, a French glassmaster of Turkish-Jewish origin. "Rethondes" was one of the specific pseudonyms or sub-brand names that Guéron used for certain lighting series.
* Historical tidbit: Rethondes is also the name of the nearby French village where the armistice of World War I was signed in 1918.
2. Characteristic style and materials
Rethondes lamps (such as table lamps, pendant lamps and chandeliers) reflect the classic French Art Deco aesthetics:
* The glass: The shades and bowls are made of pâte de verre (glass paste) or thick marbled glass (verre marbré). A hallmark is the use of vivid, contrasting color powders in the glass, such as combinations of orange, deep blue, white and ochre yellow.
* The fixture: The glasswork almost always rests on heavy, artfully wrought frames of wrought iron (fer forgé), cast iron or silvered bronze. These frames are often adorned with stylized natural motifs such as leaves, flowers or birds.
* 3. The signature
Authentic pieces are recognizable by the signature "Rethondes", which is usually etched into the glass by acid etching (acid etched) or cast in relief on the rim of the glass shade.
