Description from the seller

This interesting pair of figurative candlesticks, cast in gilded bronze dating from the late nineteenth century, recreates with notable ornamental richness the idealized image of Renaissance soldiers inspired by the era of Charles V. Conceived with a marked historicist taste, so characteristic of the decorative manufactures of the last third of the nineteenth century, they combine the function of candlesticks with the sculptural presence of authentic collectible figures.

Each soldier appears standing on a circular base lavishly decorated with acanthus leaves, scrolls and plant motifs of classical inspiration. The figure wears an elaborate parade armor, adorned with heraldic reliefs and engravings of great meticulousness. The cuirass is enriched with shields and Renaissance ornamentation, while the pauldrons, blade-like sleeves and hose faithfully reproduce the court military attire of the sixteenth century. The modeling of the face, with a noble and serene expression, is complemented by an ornate headdress that reinforces the ceremonial character of the ensemble.

The composition is articulated through the raised right arm, originally conceived as a support for the candle-bearing elements, today absent. This circumstance offers a versatility especially attractive to today’s collector, allowing the pieces to be kept as standalone decorative sculptures or to complete the finials with bobeches and candlesticks adapted to the taste of the future owner. Far from diminishing the set’s appeal, this absence enhances its sculptural character and highlights the quality of the casting and chiseling work.

The warm gilded patina of the bronze highlights the numerous details of the attire, the folds, the heraldic reliefs and the base decoration, creating play of light that enriches the visual reading of the figures. For its quality of execution, its historicist appeal and its decorative versatility, this pair constitutes a magnificent example of late nineteenth-century French or Central European ornamental production, ideal for both classical environments and eclectic interiors where decorative arts inspired by the splendor of the Renaissance are appreciated.
