Description from the seller
Exceptional Rare Vintage Moldovan Kilim - Wool on Wool - Double-Sided Reversible - 100% Handmade
A stunning and very rare authentic Bessarabian kilim rug, featuring the iconic black ground with large vibrant floral bouquet.
RARE FEATURE: DOUBLE-SIDED / REVERSIBLE - SAME PATTERN ON BOTH SIDES (FAȚĂ-VERSO)
This is the ultimate proof of authentic hand-weaving. The same floral pattern appears on both front and back (verso), characteristic of a true traditional flatweave kilim. Machine-made rugs have a white or different back. Fully reversible and usable on both sides.
- Dimensions: 160 x 290 cm (5'3" x 9'6")
- Technique: 100% Hand Woven on traditional vertical loom - Wool on Wool
- Material: 100% Natural Sheep Wool - Wool on Wool (both warp and weft are wool). This is the old, authentic technique, much rarer than later cotton-warp versions.
- Weave: Handmade flatweave kilim, double-sided, reversible
- Origin: Moldova / Bessarabia region - village weaving
- Age: Circa 1960s-1970s - Vintage
- Pattern: Folk art floral - large pink poppies and red roses, green foliage, small blue forget-me-not and purple flowers on deep black ground, with full floral border. Identical front and back.
- Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Vivid colors exceptionally well preserved - typical for wool-on-wool which holds natural dyes better. Original fringes. No holes, no major stains. Light age-appropriate wear. Heavy and dense.
- Weight: Heavy - characteristic of authentic wool on wool.
Wool on Wool double-sided kilims are highly sought after by collectors for 3 reasons:
1. Oldest and rarest technique (abandoned in 1980s)
2. Better dye preservation and heavier quality
3. Reversible - two rugs in one
Provenance: Family heirloom, kept rolled, from Moldovan estate.
A museum-quality piece of Eastern European folk art, perfect for living room, hallway runner, or as a large wall tapestry.
