This multicoloured French faience plate, attributed to Aprey and dating from the 18th century, has a scalloped rim and polychrome decoration of exotic birds, floral sprigs and rococo cartouches.
Description from the seller
French Faïence Plate with Exotic Birds — Attributed to Aprey, circa 18th Century.
An elegant French faïence plate with a scalloped rim and richly detailed polychrome decoration. Two pairs of fanciful birds appear within scrolling rococo cartouches, alternating with delicate floral sprigs. Radiating raspberry-pink bands and fine leafy stems create a textile-inspired pattern around the border, while a small flowering branch adorns the centre.
The palette combines rose pink, leafy green, blue and yellow with deep manganese outlines against an ivory-white glazed ground.
The decoration suggests an attribution to Aprey, probably from the second half of the 18th century. The plate is unmarked, attribution and dating remain provisional. Missing around the rim and hair-lines on glaze. An old paper label remains on the reverse. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
A characterful decorative piece for a collection of antique French ceramics.
