Description of the work
Magnificent bibliophilic and modern art volume dedicated to one of the most important periods of Marc Chagall’s lithographic creation.
This 1960 edition is particularly sought after for the quality of its production, the richness of its iconography, and the presence, in the complete standard edition, of original lithographs specially created for the work.
The book presents numerous color and black-and-white reproductions, accompanied by texts and notes allowing the reader to discover Chagall’s work in the field of lithography.
The book retains its original white cloth binding as well as its original illustrated dust jacket.
Provenance and special features
This copy comes from the private library of the French film director Jean-Charles Tacchella (1925-2024) and his wife Ginette Mathieu, in which many works dedicated to artists and art history were kept. In fact I am the granddaughter of Jean-Charles TACCHELLA.
An old pencil inscription appears on the first blank page, immediately after the opening of the cover:
« Weber 24/10/60 »
This annotation, dated 24 October 1960, is contemporary with the publication of the work.
Its exact origin has not been identified. It could correspond to an old ownership mark or to an annotation related to the circulation of the copy. Certainly a gift from Jacques Weber who acted in Escalier C in the film directed by my grandfather.
Condition
Old copy kept in its original publisher’s binding.
The illustrated dust jacket shows signs of wear and handling related to its age, especially on the edges and exposed portions.
The white binding and the interior pages are visible in the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
The handwritten pencil inscription has been preserved intact.
Interest for collectors
An iconic work in Marc Chagall’s bibliography, published during the artist’s lifetime, pairing his lithographic work with the know-how of the Mourlot workshop.
Its interest lies in its bibliographic importance, its original presentation, and its provenance from a private library linked to French cinema.
A beautiful collection edition for lovers of Marc Chagall, of original lithography, of art books, and of 20th-century bibliophilia.
Carefully protected shipment, suitable for an antique collectible volume.
