Description from the seller
Portuguese octagonal column in solid turned wood - 19th century.
Ancient column in wood with a mahogany tone, intended for the display of sculpture, vase, flower pot or other decorative object.
It features an octagonal top, surrounded by successive stepped mouldings, resting on a robust shaft turned in the form of a double baluster. The base, likewise octagonal, wide and moulded, provides good stability. The symmetrical and architectural composition fits Portuguese historicist furniture with Neoclassical influence, produced during the second half of the 19th century.
Parallels can be found in nineteenth-century Portuguese walnut columns and in other European peers of the period with octagonal tops, turned shafts and stepped bases.
- Origin: Portugal - attribution
- Era: second half of the 19th century, approximately 1850–1900
- Style: Historicist; Neoclassical inspiration
- Materials: solid wood, probably mahogany
- Dimensions: 71 × 38 × 38 cm
Condition: good overall condition for its age. Longitudinal shrinkage cracks in the turned shaft and small openings at the joints, without structural compromise.
