Description from the seller

Matteo Lo Greco (Palma di Montechiaro AG 1949)
Plenitude's dancer
Hand-modeled terracotta work from the years 1971–1975

Terracotta sculpture depicting a nude female figure captured in the gesture of dance, in line with his other works such as the Rubenesque Donor. The body stands on a single leg, the opposite leg extended backward, and the arms are open to the sides. The bust is upright and the head is slightly tilted, with the hair rendered in a simplified manner.

The body is full and volumetric. Hips, abdomen, and thighs are not idealized or thinned, and the figure, consistent with the artist’s productive period, seems to rise with natural ease, without denying its weight. The expressive core of the piece is the evident contrast between the mass of the body and the lightness of the gesture.

The surface is matte and of a warm color, with traces of hand modeling: impressions and slight irregularities are visible especially on the hips and thighs.

The figure rests on a white-painted wooden base, which is not part of the terracotta.

Signature and inscriptions
On the side, incised in the terracotta: "LO GRECO".
Below the name, numerical inscription "7-60". The meaning has not yet been verified: it is not a declared edition nor a documented date.

Dimensions and weight
Height: 42 cm
Width: 35 cm
Depth: 15 cm
Weight: 1.5 kg [specify whether with or without base]

Author
Matteo Lo Greco was born in Sicily in 1949 and lives and works in Venice. After earning a degree in Political Science at the University of Palermo, he studied at the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts, as a pupil of the Portuguese sculptor Antonio Duarte, and became an official member of the National Society of Fine Arts of Portugal.

In 1982 the Mirandela Contemporary Art Museum, in Portugal, inaugurated exhibitions of his works, and some of his pieces remain part of the permanent collection.
In 1999 he received the Silver Medal of the City of Palermo.
In 2004 he held a solo show at Ca’ Pesaro, the Venice modern art museum.
In 2025 the exhibition "Afthonia", presented at Milano Scultura, brought together fifteen of his works from the 1980s to today.

His work focuses on the female figure, with full, volumetric bodies that celebrate abundance and strength. His well-known works are in bronze, cast using the lost-wax process.

The dancer theme is present in the artist’s bronze production, in several versions and sizes. This terracotta is coherent in subject and type with that production.
Provenance
A direct gift from the artist to my father Silvio

The condition of the work is pristine and shows no chips or any defects of any kind.

Sold from a large private collection. The seller is willing to provide additional photos and details upon request.

SHIPPING: Courier or Poste Italiane with insurance for the declared value. Tracking and signature upon delivery, photos of the closed package and of the piece before packing, with date, to document its condition at the time of shipment.
