A 4,154 g cluster of botryoidal greenish-blue chalcedony with sparkling microcrystalline surfaces and calcite, from Brazil, measuring 425 × 240 × 100 mm.
Description from the seller
Spectacular Blue Botryoidal Calcedony and Calcite Crystal Bouquet — This extraordinary specimen features a magnificent green calcedony botryoidal formation, commonly but improperly referred to as “green amethyst” in the commercial circuit due to its captivating color. Its surface is richly adorned with an explosion of small calcite crystals, which add luster and contrast to the already complex texture. Elegantly mounted on an artistic base in wood and brass, this piece is a true natural sculpture, ready to embellish any environment. Calcedony is a microcrystalline form of quartz, characterized by aggregates of tiny silica crystals that form mammillary or botryoidal structures. In this specimen, the distinctive bluish-green color is probably due to inclusions of minerals such as celadonite or other iron- and magnesium-bearing silicates that became incorporated into the calcedony matrix during its slow crystallization. The botryoidal formation, with its globular and rounded surfaces, results from simultaneous growth at numerous crystallization centers, creating an effect reminiscent of grape clusters or, as in this lot, a flourishing mineral bouquet. The presence of calcite crystals, a calcium carbonate mineral, intercalated and layered on the calcedony, testifies to the complex geochemical dynamics that occurred in the formation environment. These crystals, often white or transparent, stand out against the green surface of the calcedony, catching the light and adding another level of visual interest. Their later growth compared to the calcedony suggests variations in the chemical conditions of the hydrothermal solutions from which both minerals were deposited. Hailing from Brazil, a land renowned for its incredible variety and quality of minerals, this piece embodies wild beauty and nature’s ingenuity. Brazil is one of the world’s principal sources of quartz and its varieties, including calcedony and amethyst, and specimens of this quality are sought after by collectors and mineral enthusiasts for their uniqueness and aesthetic impact. The care in preparation and mounting on a base further enhances its display value, making it a gallery piece. This specimen is not just a mineral, but a true natural work of art, combining the precise science of mineralogy with the aesthetic charm of a sculpture. Its presence is ideal for enriching a natural history collection, serving as a focal point in a professional studio, an elegant library, or as a distinctive decorative element in contemporary interior design. It is a fragment of our planet’s geological history, skillfully presented to inspire wonder and reflection.
