Bronze and marble sculpture after Edgar Degas, titled “La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans”, signed “Degas” and measuring 38.2 cm high.
Description from the seller
A particularly decorative bronze sculpture of a young ballerina, executed after the world-renowned work La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans by Edgar Degas (1834–1917).
The dancer is depicted in the characteristic elegant pose: head held proudly aloft, hands behind the back, and one leg relaxed forward. Especially the refined details in the face, the hair with bow, the snug bodice and the richly pleated skirt give the sculpture a strong presence.
The bronze has a beautiful dark-brown, warm patina, with the higher parts subtly highlighted. This enhances the modeling and the different textures in a very pleasing way.
On the bronze base there is the signature “Degas.” In addition, the sculpture features a round bronze plaque/stamp including, among others, “Bronze Garanti Paris” and “JB Déposé.” These markings are clearly visible in the photos.
The whole stands on a heavy black marble/natural stone pedestal with light veining, which nicely contrasts with the warm bronze.
A very atmospheric work of art that sits well in both a classical and a modern interior and, due to the recognizable subject, is especially appealing to connoisseurs of figurative bronze sculptures and ballet.
