THE WORK
“Wardrobe by the Sea” depicts a bedroom scene in a seaside house, where a girl with brown and curly hair carefully adjusts the green cardigan of a doll. Beside her, another doll with red hair and braids sits on a wicker chair, wearing a blue dress and striped stockings.

To the left, a pastel-yellow wardrobe painted with blue flowers reveals hanging clothes, decorated boxes, and small brown shoes. The wicker basket in the foreground is filled with floral fabrics and a pink ribbon, while a plush lamb rests on the woven rug.

From the window you can see the sea with two sailboats and a rocky cliff covered in vegetation. In the background, the bed with pink and white blankets and a painting of a boat complete the room’s bright light.

“With ‘Wardrobe by the Sea’ I wanted to tell the pleasure of the small, everyday things: a dress to choose, a ribbon to adjust, a doll to dress before going out. The girl is focused on a simple gesture, and the sea at the window reminds us that there is always elsewhere. I chose to work with morning light, because it is the light that softens fabrics and pastel colors. The biggest challenge was letting the vibrancy of the embroidery and clothes coexist with the calm of the room, without one disturbing the other. I chose EMA Fine Art paper because its completely matte finish renders pastels without reflection, like a page from an illustrated book. I hope this tableau brings the serenity of a morning spent dressing dolls into any setting.”
