This French inlaid sewing box, dating from 1800–1850, is made of wood, brass and mother-of-pearl.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique luxury sewing box – fine inlay work, mother-of-pearl and brass – probably France, ca. 1850

Refined antique sewing box or necessity, likely manufactured in France around 1840–1860. An elegant collectible whose quality lies especially in the carefully worked details.

The lid features a beautifully drawn light veneer field, framed by contrasting cross-placed veneer bands and extremely narrow inlaid lines. In the center shines a mother-of-pearl cartouche, precisely set into a gracefully formed wooden frame. The natural luster of the mother-of-pearl beautifully contrasts with the warm tones of the wood.

Particularly well-crafted is the continuous brass rim around the lid, which fluidly follows the rounded corners. Together with the continuous veneer work on the sides, this gives the box a luxurious, balanced appearance. It is in this small format that the precision of the workmanship comes into full relief.

The exterior is well preserved and shows an attractive patina of age. Inside remains part of the original old blue satin lining: a tangible reminder of the originally cared-for finish.

An attractive item for collectors of antique boxes, historical sewing accessories, and refined 19th-century woodwork. Also as a small jewelry or keepsake box, a particularly personal object.
