Description from the seller
“God Inc.” is a landmark documentary photography project by acclaimed Belgian Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer that investigates the unique, highly commercialized, and deeply emotional landscape of religion in the United States. Originally captured in the early 1990s and later expanded into a multi-decade retrospective, the work frames American spirituality as a massive, corporate-like market product—hence the title "God Incorporated".
De Keyzer explores how spiritual enlightenment in America is often package-marketed like a consumer good. He subtly questions whether the profound emotional displays are genuine spiritual breakthroughs or heavily engineered experiences. The project avoids mainstream, quiet worship, focusing instead on fringe, intense, and highly theatrical religious subcultures. Images range from "The Son of God" biker groups in Daytona Beach and Ku Klux Klan rallies, to massive Easter passion plays, Pentecostal revivals, and Christian music festivals in Las Vegas.
While originally published as a standalone book in 1992 following a year De Keyzer spent traveling the U.S. in a camper van, the project received a definitive, massive update published by Lannoo Publishers under the title God Inc I & II.
