This pair of complete HWN (Wimmer) “Curio Tram” clockwork tinplate toy sets dates from 1950–1960 and comes with circular tracks and original boxes.
Description from the seller
Exceptional and rare vintage lot consisting of a twin pair (two identical and complete sets of the same model) of the famous mechanical tram/bus known as the "Curio Tram" (Kuriose Straßenbahn). This is a post-war German production, approximately dating from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. Each piece bears the prestigious historical inscription "Made in U.S. Zone Germany" on the boxes, placing its manufacture during the Allied occupation period. The trademark with the cloverleaf and the letters stamped on the vehicles and on the box labels identifies the manufacture as HWN (Heinrich Wimmer Nürnberg) / Höfler (Twentieth Century German).
Each of the two sets is complete and includes:
• Vehicle: A small two-tone (yellow and red) lithographed tinplate motor coach/bus with a spring-wound mechanism.
• Track: A circular track layout of metal rails equipped with original fins for reversing or changing the tram’s movement.
• Accessories: A vintage winding key for each set.
• Packaging: Its own original rough cardboard box from the period with a colorful illustrated label applied to the lid.
Conditions and technical details:
• Mechanical status: The two sets are complete and the internal spring mechanisms are intact and respond to winding. Having remained stationary for decades inside their packaging, they require normal cleaning and lubrication (oil) before use to restore the original smooth movement. The item is sold as-is and regular operation after lubrication has not been directly tested.
• Aesthetic status: Excellent original vintage condition ("All original"). The tin bodies retain warm colors but show scratches, abrasions, small losses of the original lithography, and oxidation consistent with age. The wheels and track supports show wear and alterations to the metal finish. Any past restorations or the originality of each individual internal micro-component have not been verified.
• Boxes: Both vintage boxes are present, structurally solid and complete. They show natural signs of time such as abrasions, creases, wear and small tears at corners and edges, as well as handwritten numbers and annotations (including a pencil signature on the front) documenting period inventory cataloging.
Indicative dimensions (approximate, derived from photos with a ruler):
• Length of each vehicle: about 6 cm.
• Outer diameter of the track circuit: about 16–17 cm.
Finding a twin set in this state of completeness and preservation represents a unique opportunity for collectors specializing in German occupation-era toys (U.S. Zone) and Golden Age micro-railways. The lot includes both sets and the two photographed boxes. The attached photographs document faithfully the contents and condition of the offered item and are to be considered an integral part of the description.
Professional, careful, tracked, and insured shipping.
