Lehmann (EPL) ‘Arabian’ is a German lithographed tinplate clockwork sulky toy with a horse and jockey, made in the 1920s or 1930s and accompanied by its original box.
Description from the seller
Extraordinary and highly rare museum-grade collector's piece: the famous clockwork toy "Arabian" (Racing Sulky with horse and jockey), produced in Germany by the legendary manufacturer Lehmann (Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk) between the 1920s and 1930s.
The toy, entirely made of premium lithographed tinplate, depicts a racehorse (marked with the number racing "5" on its saddle) pulling a sulky driven by a jockey with a yellow and red jacket and red boots. The lower chassis clearly bears the original factory trademark stamp "MADE IN GERMANY - D.R.Pat." (Deutsches Reichspatent).
The value of the lot is greatly enhanced by the presence of its original period cardboard box, decorated on the lid and sides with a wonderful and vibrant color lithography that shows the frantic sulky race inside a crowded racetrack.
• Manufacturer: Ernst Paul Lehmann (EPL) - Brandenburg
• Model: "Arabian" Sulky / Racing Calesse (Ref. 760)
• Period: 1920s / 1930s (Pre-war era)
• Origin: Germany
• Indicative Dimensions: Length approx. 15-16 cm (as documented by the measuring tape in the photos)
Conditions and technical details:
• Mechanical status: Intact but needs oiling. The internal clockwork mechanism, activated via the original fixed butterfly winding key located on the wheel, is complete and responds to winding. Having remained stationary for many decades inside the box, it requires normal cleaning and lubrication to restore the characteristic smooth motion of the horse’s legs and the wheels. It is sold as is.
• Aesthetic condition: Great original vintage condition ("All original"). The lithography retains beautiful and expressive colors. It shows light and normal signs of aging, small paint losses, superficial abrasions, and an authentic patina due to age that certifies its history. No restorations or touch-ups.
• Box: Present and original. Structurally solid, it shows the natural signs of cardboard aging, light abrasions, and minor edge wear, but the illustrated top label is wonderfully preserved and fully legible.
A unique opportunity for the most discerning collectors of pre-war Lehmann toys and tinplate automata. The numerous attached photographs faithfully document the contents and provenance and are considered an integral part of the description.
Professional, careful, tracked, and insured shipping.
