This extendable wooden bookstand in Renaissance style dates from the first half of the 20th century.
Description from the seller
Antique Extendable Book Stand / Book Holder – Mercury, Grotesques & Mythical Creatures – Fine Marquetry (Inlay) – Italy/France, ca. 1880–1900
Decorative extendable tabletop book stand from the Historicism period (late 19th century). The piece stands out for its elaborate ornamental design: the back panel depicts the god Mercury / Hermes within a meander border, while the folding side panels are decorated with delicate mythical creatures and birds in the Renaissance grotesque style.
The width can be adjusted to accommodate the number of books; the side panels fold in for space-saving storage. A rare bibliophilic collector’s piece for a classical library.
Object Details
Manufacturer / Origin: Unknown master craftsman; France or Italy (stylistically related to Sorrento work).
Date / Period: Historicism / Belle Époque (ca. 1880–1900).
Style: Neo-Renaissance / Grotesque.
Technique: Fine marquetry on burl veneer, combined with delicate hand painting and finely segmented decorative borders.
Material: Burl veneer (walnut/thuja burl), ebonized edges, softwood core.
Dimensions: Length adjustable from 39.0 cm to 65.2 cm | Width (depth): 13.8 cm | Height: 17.9 cm
Condition
Good, authentic original condition with an attractive aged patina.
The extending and folding mechanisms work perfectly.
The wood is structurally sound; there is a natural drying crack on the left side of the back panel (with no effect on stability).
The veneer is secure; age-typical craquelure in the historic finish, light wear to the edges, and isolated age spots in the wood underscore its authenticity.
No missing pieces in the marquetry; the painted colors are well preserved.
The underside retains its original lining, worn in keeping with its age.
Shipping: Will be packed securely and protected against impact during transit; insured shipping with tracking.
