This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 220D is a diesel saloon with a manual gearbox.
Description from the seller
STRENGTHS:
• Entirely refitted brown leather-like upholstery with Mercedes-Benz logo embroidered on the headrests
• Significant recent mechanical work with invoices to support it (clutch, starter, belts)
• Vehicle registered in France with French registration certificate
HISTORY/PRESENTATION:
The Mercedes-Benz W114/W115, nicknamed “/8” (Strich-Acht) in reference to its 1968 launch year, was designed by the renowned designer Paul Bracq. Renowned for its legendary stiffness and exceptional mechanical longevity, it embodies the quintessential German classic sedan.
This diesel-powered example features a pastel white/ivory body and a redone interior. The vehicle is offered with French registration and comes with its original tool kit and workshop/maintenance manual.
EXTERIOR:
The paint was carefully redone by the previous owner and presents an overall neat finish in off-white. The chrome elements (bumpers, moldings, surrounds) are in very good condition, and the rocker panels are sound. The manual windows operate correctly.
Several aesthetic defects and signs of wear should be noted:
• A small chip/impact on the hood, probably from a stone strike.
• Slight deformation/impact visible on the front grille.
• Signs of superficial rust on the front splitter, rear splitter, and in the front wheel arches.
• Door seals are porous due to age.
• Tires are generally in good condition but show wear cracks (replacement needed to pass the technical inspection).
INTERIOR:
The cabin has been fully restored and is presented in a pristine state of cleanliness. The front seats and rear bench have been reupholstered in brown leatherette with light stitching and a sewn-on Mercedes-Benz emblem on the front seatbacks. The dashboard, door trim, headliner, and floor mats are also in good condition.
Equipment and features:
• Recent CD/DVD radio with USB port.
• Original speakers preserved.
• Tachometer not operational (not reconnected during the clutch change).
• On-board clock does not work.
• Electric antenna is functional but shows signs of seizing.
• HVAC controls/switches are partially seized.
• The rest of the electrical equipment works, including the glove box light.
MECHANICS:
The diesel engine starts readily, cold or warm, with no abnormal smoke. The diesel tank has been removed and cleaned. A 5-speed gearbox was fitted by the previous owner in place of the original. No fluid leaks observed. The suspension is in good working order.
Interventions and points of note:
• New belts.
• Clutch disc, master and slave cylinders, and hoses recently replaced.
• Starter replaced (documented on invoice).
• Braking: the left rear caliper was replaced; the left front caliper shows the start of sticking/seizure requiring overhaul.
• Slight functional play noted in the transmission.
• Plastic hoses and fluid reservoirs show aging/wear.
• In the boot: the spare wheel, original tool kit, and workshop manual.
DOCUMENTS:
• French registration certificate (Carte Grise)
• Insurance certificate
• Recent invoices detailing mechanical work performed.
The vehicle can be inspected on-site before the sale closes. pickup is the responsibility of the purchaser. The procedures and costs related to transferring ownership or obtaining export documents (including COF/Conformity Certificate if required) remain the buyer’s responsibility.

Disclaimer
Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
