Description from the seller
Icon, Russia, 18th century Saint Prophet Jonah, undoubtedly from an iconostasis tempera on wood H_28 cm L_20 cm
Icon, Russia, 18th century. Saint Prophet Jonah, probably from the iconostasis.
Remainder of an important imperial Russian iconostasis, this oval-shaped icon depicts the Prophet Jonah (inscribed in Old Church Slavonic on the border СВ. ІОНА). The saint is shown bust-length, looking to his left, holding an unfurled scroll (svitok) displaying his prophetic text in Cyrillic characters.
In the row of prophets (Prorotcheski riad) of an iconostasis, each Old Testament prophet is inevitably depicted holding an unfurled scroll (svitok) displaying his main oracle. This is one of his major attributes, whereas the apostles more often hold closed books or keys (for Peter).
The reverse features two horizontal wooden strengthening crossbars, characteristic of traditional construction of ancient icons.
The icon is presented in its original patina, with a superb historical patina. It shows visible lacunae and wear to the pictorial layer, notably on the bottom left of the garment and around the halo. The original gilding of the background has given way to the underlying whitish preparation, which enhances its authentic and archaeological character.
Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any purchase.
The object will be carefully wrapped and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
