Description from the seller
Portuguese ceremonial chair in carved wood - D. João V style, c. 1880–1920.
Impressive Portuguese ceremonial chair, executed in warm-toned wood, probably walnut, with an exceptionally tall backrest and profusely carved.
The upholstered backrest features a wavy contour, crowned by an exuberant pierced pediment with acanthus leaves, volutes and vegetal motifs. The contoured waist is ornamented with a central shell and scrolls, extending into front legs that are curved and end in expressive claw feet.
The seat and backrest are covered in cream-toned fabric, secured by decorative metal nails. The combination of the monumental backrest with the baroque carving gives it a strong ceremonial and decorative character.
