AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Narrow carved wooden console - Neo-Renaissance style, c. 1880–1910.

Elegant wall console, probably of French manufacture, made of carved wood in a reddish-brown tone.

It features a shaped top above a small drawer, with a central support in the form of a cartouche, profusely carved with foliage, flowers, scrollwork and large volutes. It rests on a moulded, similarly shaped base incorporating a second drawer. Both drawers have circular yellow-metal pulls. Flat back, designed to stand against a wall.

The architectural composition and ornamental vocabulary place the piece within the historicist Neo-Renaissance taste, with the influence of the Henri II style, which was widely popular in French furniture in the late nineteenth century. Comparable French walnut consoles from this period feature pronounced mouldings, drawers and carved supports.
