Description from the seller

Single-Pedestal Center Table in Carved Walnut - Rococo/Victorian Style - 19th Century

Main Description

For sale, a refined antique center table with a single pedestal, a piece of furniture of great elegance dating probably to the second half of the 19th century. This table embodies the opulent and cultivated taste of the Rococo Revival or High Victorian periods.

Top:

The table features an oval top, made with high-quality walnut veneer. The grain (walnut figured grain) is vivid, complex, and creates a beautiful natural “flame” pattern that catches the light, as visible in the close-up details. The edge of the top is finished with a beaded owl’s beak molding, rounded and smooth to the touch, which adds depth and definition to the silhouette. The surface finish is a spirit varnish (French polish) that enhances the warmth and richness of the wood.

Base:

The top rests on a robust and dramatic central mass, carved in solid wood. The main shaft is sculpted with a fluted or spiral baluster motif, elegantly tapering. At the base, the pedestal opens into four elegantly shaped cabriole legs. Each leg is adorned with foliate and Rococo scrolls at the upper knee and ends with a precisely carved scroll foot. The curved legs not only provide stability but also give the table a sense of movement and grace.

Technical Details:

The construction is solid and traditional. Under the top, there is a dark wood cross-support (stretcher) fixed with antique screws, which secures the top to the pedestal (as shown in the detail photo). This table is designed as a central piece, perfect for a foyer, a library, or as an elegant breakfast table.

Conditions:

The table is in excellent antique condition. It is structurally solid and stable. The top finish is glossy and well preserved; it shows only minimal signs of wear, light surface micro-scratches, and very slight imperfections consistent with age and decorous use (visible only in raking light). There are no evident cracks, major restorations, or missing parts in the carvings. The legs and feet are intact. Please carefully review the detailed photos for an accurate assessment of surface conditions.
