Description from the seller
This is a set of Japanese *nihon-muko-machibori* (double-mortise chisels) from the Shōwa era. These specialized traditional Japanese woodworking tools are designed for cutting double mortises (*nihon-hozo*)—a technique frequently employed in Japanese *tategu* (joinery/fixtures) and traditional architectural carpentry—allowing for the precise, simultaneous creation of two spaced mortise slots. Each chisel bears several markings near the tang: the term "登録" (*tōroku*) indicates a registered trademark, signifying an officially recognized brand; the symbol enclosed within a circle is the *yagō* (workshop mark)—a signature unique to the specific forge or craftsman; and the numerical markings denote the width of the blade, enabling the woodworker to quickly identify the size. The set is comprehensive, featuring a full range of sizes, and is crafted from high-quality, forged steel.
As vintage tools, they exhibit natural signs of use, including traces of sharpening, rust, and wear accumulated over time. The steel remains in excellent condition, fully capable of being sharpened and put back into active service.
