Description from the seller
Portuguese Romantic mahogany chest of drawers with four drawers – 19th century.
A Portuguese-made chest of drawers, crafted during the second half of the 19th century in the Romantic style, with decorative elements inspired by the Neo-Renaissance.
Rectangular solid mahogany construction, featuring a projecting, molded top with a stepped profile. The front comprises four stacked drawers, decorated with applied rectangular panels and raised diamond-shaped central elements.
Each drawer has two hinged handles and a pierced brass keyhole escutcheon. The side uprights feature vertical fluting, while the case is finished below with a molded base. It stands on four flattened spherical feet.
The geometric composition of the fronts, turned feet, and use of decorative hardware place this piece within the Portuguese historicist furniture produced in the late 19th century, while retaining the functional structure of Romantic chests of drawers.
Period: Second half of the 19th century, approximately 1870–1900
Probable origin: Portugal
Materials: Mahogany, other woods, and brass
Dimensions: 87 × 110 × 47 cm
In good condition, with wear consistent with its age.
