Portuguese carved-wood chest of drawers in a D. José/Portuguese Baroque revival style, probably made around 1920–1940.
Description from the seller
Portuguese chest of drawers in the style of King José I, carved mahogany.
Grand Portuguese chest of drawers in mahogany, inspired by the Baroque furniture of the reign of King José I. It features a shaped top with a carved edge, a serpentine front and four spacious drawers. The uprights, apron and feet are richly carved with scrollwork, foliage and shell motifs.
The drawer fronts feature framed panels and fluted decoration, and are fitted with large handles and pierced cast-brass keyhole escutcheons. It stands on broad, curved, carved front feet that visually extend the side uprights.
The exuberant ornamentation, the construction of the back and the relatively uniform carving suggest a Portuguese revivalist production from the 20th century, probably from the middle of the century, rather than an original chest of drawers from the reign of King José I.
- Probable period: circa 1920–1940
- Style: King José I / Portuguese Baroque Revival
- Origin: Portugal
- Materials: carved mahogany; brass fittings
- Dimensions: 83 × 118 × 55 cm
In good condition, with wear and signs of use consistent with its age.
