Unknown - Qur'an - Herat - 1460

Qur'an - Herat - Timurid - AD1460. This Quranic manuscript folio was scribed shortly after Shah Rukh’s reign at a time of great political turmoil. The folio contains verses 4–35 of Surah Al-Ma'arij (Chapter 70: The Ascending Stairways or The Ways of Ascent) which deal with the reality of the Day of Judgment, the human condition, and the contrasting traits of those destined for punishment versus those destined for Paradise.

The folio has evenly spaced and elegant script containing 14 lines of unbroken scripture. Free-hand 'aya' in a simple gold spiral mark out the verses. Unusually the folio contains five marginal roundels stacked up its right margin, alternating gold ground and lapis blue ground, each filled with fine scrolling and arabesque ornament. These mark the 5th divisions of the chapter. The folios is fully framed in gold and blue lines. There is some water staining to the upper left of the folio impacting on the upper left margin, but this does not detract from the historical impact of this folio.

Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.

New German customs regulations mean that we are now having to pay customs before the item leaves the UK. Regrettably we have to pass these costs on through a surcharge on postage to Germany. As we don't know the final auctions costs we have estimated the approximate value. If the custom costs more than we have anticipated, we will absorb the additional customs duty.
