Description from the seller
Antique square embroidered linen tablecloth, Egyptian-inspired design, approx. 87 cm
Square tablecloth in natural beige linen, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, with polychrome embroidery. At each of the four corners, a stylized face shown frontally, adorned with a headdress and a broad collar, is framed by two long-necked birds and scrolling foliage.
The fan-shaped flowers evoke the lotus and give the piece an Egyptian-inspired touch. The design of the faces, the stylized adornments, and the flat areas of color also recall the visual world of the Ballets Russes, particularly Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring (1913).
A circular border dotted with small pale blue flowers frames the plain center. The embroidery combines yellow, dusty pink, pale blue, and cream, with fine black outlines accentuating the motifs. An openwork hem runs along all four sides.
In good overall condition for its age. A few small stains in the center and a slightly pulled thread in the embroidery, visible in the photos. The colors have retained their brightness.
Approximately 87 cm square. Weight close to 400 g.
