Description from the seller

An impressive 19th-century brass crucifix.

This freestanding devotional object combines a sculptural figure of Christ with a polished architectural cross and a substantial stepped pedestal. Its warm golden colour and clearly defined silhouette give it a strong presence, suitable for a sacred-art collection or a thoughtfully arranged devotional interior.

The cross has rounded arms terminating in ball-shaped finials and moulded collars. Above Christ is an ornamental, pierced cartouche bearing the inscription INRI, the Latin abbreviation for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Its curling scrollwork introduces a Baroque-derived decorative accent against the comparatively neoclassical restrained framework.

Christ is represented with raised, outstretched arms, an inclined head, an elongated torso and a folded loincloth. Beneath his feet, the skull and crossed bones recall Golgotha, the “place of the skull.” In Christian tradition, this motif also evokes Adam and the promise of redemption through Christ’s sacrifice, adding theological depth to the composition.

The pedestal features a cylindrical central section, concentric mouldings and rounded feet. The reverse photographs reveal recessed cast construction and visible attachment points, providing useful insight into the object’s manufacture. Bright brass surfaces contrast with darker recesses, while localised green oxidation and pale deposits remain visible.

As a brass altar or domestic devotional crucifix, it belongs to the enduring tradition of Catholic metalwork that carried earlier sculptural and ornamental models of the 19th Century.

Condition
Good overall condition, with the principal figure and ornaments present. Surface scratches, tarnish, localised green oxidation and pale deposits are visible, particularly in recesses and on the reverse. The brass retains an attractive bright appearance.
