Figurative Shankadi Headrest - Luba - DRC Congo 
Provenance: private collection, Belgium. 
Dimensions: 19 x 19 cm.
Material: wood. 

Although the Luba society has a patrilineal structure, myths of creation reserve a privileged place to women.  Many sculptures celebrate femininity.   
This headrest is composed of a base on which is placed a caryatid figure, finely carved, especially regarding the “cascading” hairdo, created by the eponymous master, in the Shankadi style. 
Magnificent patina of wear.
