In Nigeria and Benin, the Yoruba have a high birth rate almost twice higher than the average. Before the 18th century, these twins named “Ibeji” were often seen as monsters and were therefore victims of infanticides.
However, later on and to this day, the “Ibeji” are considered as blessings.  The status of half-deity is granted to them and they are venerated as such. Named “Orishas”, they bring good luck to the family in which they were born. When one or both twins die, it is still considered nowadays as a great calamity within the family, who needs to perform several rites immediately, in order to appease the soul of the deceased twin.
