African Mask in wood from the Baule ethnic group of Ivory Coast

Baule Mblo Mask  This type of Baule anthropomorphic mask represents an important person of the village. The facial features are very refined, conferring a serene look to this piece. The hairdo is finely chiselled, the forehead and temples bear scarifications. 

This type of African Baule mask was used in entertainment and rejoicing festivities. This Mblo mask had a protective function. 

This mask is representative of Baule art, with a lovely balance between the forms and the volumes, as well as the finely carved details.
