Vintage steamer trunk wardrobe, probably French manufacture around 1930, in leather and silk with a dark blue finish, dimensions 80 × 50 × 26 cm, one piece, showing wear consistent with age and interior blue fabric with hanging rails.
Description from the seller
An fascinating vintage travel steamer trunk, probably of French manufacture, dating from the first half of the 20th century.
Constructed with a rigid frame covered in blue-green petrol leather, it features robust riveted edge bindings, protective corner pieces, and numerous brass fittings, including locks, hinges and clasps. The surface preserves a splendid patina, with scratches, abrasions and signs of use that testify to the many journeys undertaken.
The trunk was designed to be transported in a horizontal position and, once reaching the destination, placed vertically and opened like a true portable wardrobe. The interior, lined in blue fabric, retains the clothes-hanging rods, garment straps and several wooden, shaped hangers.
Particularly evocative are the traces of its history: the initials painted “L.V.B.”, the red-and-cream decorative band running along the exterior, and a faded old label from the Hotel Locarno, partially preserved.
This type of steamer trunk was mainly used in the early decades of the 20th century by travelers who faced long railway journeys and crossings on transatlantic liners between Europe and America.
The item is presented in condition consistent with its age and use: visible are scratches, oxidation, small losses and deterioration of the inner lining. These characteristics do not compromise its charm, but rather enhance its authenticity and lived-in character. The glossy surface creates reflections that can make it difficult to reproduce its true hue photographically.
A rare, scenographic piece rich in history, ideal as a decorative furnishing element, a decorative wardrobe, a display piece, or an environment with an industrial and retro taste.
Dimensions: 80 × 50 × 26 cm.
