Pfemba : Sculptures de Maternité du Mayombe et du Pays Kongo

Les sculptures de maternité du Mayombe et de la région côtière du pays Kongo comptent parmi les œuvres les plus emblématiques de l’art africain. Leur puissance réside dans leur universalité, leur naturalisme et la perfection de leurs formes. Ces statuettes, appelées Pfemba ou Phemba, incarnent des valeurs culturelles profondes autour de la fertilité et de la maternité.

Usage et symbolique :
• Culte de fécondité féminine : Ces œuvres étaient utilisées dans des rituels dirigés par des sages-femmes pour célébrer la fertilité.
• Représentations de la maternité : On y voit souvent des femmes allaitant, symbolisant l’amour maternel et la transmission de la vie.
• Signification des détails : Selon certaines interprétations, les enfants représentés avec des jambes raides symboliseraient les défunts, tandis que ceux aux jambes pliées incarneraient les vivants. La scène pourrait représenter une femme de chef présentant son premier enfant, vivant ou mort-né.
