AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful full parchment binding with gold filigree and frames on the covers and spine, also featuring the author's handwriting from an ancient hand. Red spray edges, slightly browned.

1 white card, [26] non-numbered cards, 785, [82] non-numbered cards, 2 white cards

Samuel Pitiscus (1637-1727) was a Dutch historian and classicist. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian, probably from the 1st century, author of his only known and surviving work, Historiae Alexandri Magni, 'Stories of Alexander the Great,' or more fully Historiarum Alexandri Magni Macedonis Libri Qui Supersunt, 'All the surviving books of the histories of Alexander the Great of Macedonia.' Much of it is missing. Aside from his name on the manuscripts, little is known for certain about him. This fact alone has led philologists to believe he had another historical identity, with which, due to the events of the time, the connection was broken.

Beautiful second edition with 14 engravings on copper plates, including an illustrated frontispiece and the portrait of Samuel Pitiscus, 7 fold-out illustrations, and a map (but pages xxi, xxii, xxiii, xxxiii are missing). Slight foxing is present, but overall it is a fine copy in excellent condition, very usable.
