Description from the seller
Synthetic enamel painting on canvas from the Sleepers series 2024.
Canino investigates the pictorial space in search of figures that tear open the canvas and transcend the dichotomy between life and death, sleep and wakefulness, and light and shadow.
A series of blurred, ethereal figures that dissolve into the void to reassemble into something else.
...the figures of Canino seem to disappear into nothingness; they liquefy and flow in a vital stream that gives life to numerous other forms...
“which exhausts itself like an hemorrhage, which strips bare to the aspect that assumes its own nakedness that exposes its own exposure” vulnerability and sorrow, in DC’s painting it is as if they emerge as states of nature. The use of synthetic enamels as a medium, and the trace resulting from their blending, confer dimension and energy to the figuration of bodies which, in Canino’s stroke, present themselves in a vision that is as if skinned. Torn apart and yet regenerated. Also due to the particular reddish tint that the artist has experimented with and uses, the tone of oxidized blood, and the gloss achieved by the enamel that recalls the vivid vision of the muscle fibers of which a body is composed. A subcutaneous gaze, beyond the reassuring and homogeneous surface of identity, to reach the living flesh of otherness. “We must uproot the idea that knowing equals possessing the being to the point of reducing it to nothing, thus neutralizing its constitutive alterity. [...] it is only an attempt to reduce the distance between the self and the Other in order to guarantee the self-sufficiency of the Same, its identification.”}
''...layer after layer (diversity), the painter manages to compose a single body, a mass, a subject.
the representation, then, of the set enclosed within the ego....

Domenico Canino
Born in Catanzaro in 1986 and raised in Albi among the Small Sila mountains, where he began his early artistic studies, immediately incorporating the aesthetics of nature as the subject of his works.
For several years he lived and worked in Rome, where he earned a diploma in Scenography from the Academy of Fine Arts with the project on auditory perception 'Study on the vibration of the Iron'.
They have collaborated with several theatre companies, curating the set designs and visual installations of performances, blending artistic expression with theatre design techniques.
Since 2009, she has continued her research in the field of Sound Art and in the field of video imagery, without abandoning the painterly mark. Her works are of a projective nature. Through action, painting, and electronic arts, she develops experiments and artistic research whose guiding soul is the concept of "existence" and its sacrality.
The art of Canino is a primordial summons to the unity of Life, understood as an organic whole, yet never harmonious, opposed to the will of consciousness of contemporary civilization. And the cult of the unconscious, of the primal thought, as a cyclic return to the origin of pure existence. Canino's antiheroes break the cages of time and space imposed by mechanized society. They tear the canvas to surpass the dichotomy between life and death, sleep and wakefulness, light and shadow.
The Arte/Vita binomial, time, nature, space, and the animal are recurring aspects also in his visual/sound compositions, often developed in natural spaces and then installed in exhibition spaces, such as “My sign and the Sign of the Earth,” a work developed over two years (2011–2012), or such as “Pieces from the Sacred Tree,” “Blue Line in the Space,” “Ten Different Moments” (2010). Also in 2010 he continues with multimedia language and techniques to realize the video works “Internal Videoportrait” and “Here,” and the surreal photo series “Pages from Life book.”
Since 2011 he has been working, using synthetic enamels, on the very long painting series “Space, Energy, Masses”, “The Past, the Present, and the Furture of the Human Condition”, “Hypernature” and “You, me and the others”, with the latter seeking to define and affirm his painting style and visual language.
He currently lives and works in Bologna and collaborates with the Giambattista Vico Institute, serving as a lecturer in Figurative Arts, Multimedia Design, and the History of Art.
