Japanese photographer Yoshioka Gumi was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1944, graduated from the current Tokyo Polytechnic University, lived and worked as a photographer in Okinawa and then became a television director in the 1980s, first on NTV's ‘NNN Documentary’, then on TV Asahi's ‘News Station’ from the mid-1980s, and in the 1990s as an anchor on TV Asahi's ‘JNN News Special’. He also worked as a producer and journalist, producing documentaries on war, conflict, poverty and other issues, and writing books on the subject. This book is a collection of photographs published together with volunteers in 1970, when he was a photographer, and consists of works that won the Heibonsha ‘Taiyo Prize’, a semi-solar award. From Okinawa's point of view, this was a humiliating outcome. This book can be called a masterpiece of photojournalism, describing a series of struggles in Okinawa, from the current situation and suffering of the Okinawans, their anger and resistance to the US and Japanese governments, to their independence activities.
