Large Martaban jar from Java, Indonesia, in glazed stoneware with a brown speckled translucent glaze, decorated with dragons and waves; height 55 cm, diameter 35 cm, weight 9.8 kg, dating to 1970–1980, in good condition with minor signs of ageing.
Description from the seller
Large Antique Martaban Jar – Java
This impressive antique Martaban jar originates from Java, in the Southeast Asian archipelago.
Crafted in stoneware and covered in a rich brown glaze with a beautiful speckled, translucent finish, the jar is decorated in high relief with mythical dragons and wave motifs—a stylistic homage to Chinese imperial symbolism. The dragons, long revered in East and Southeast Asian cultures as protectors and symbols of fortune, are rendered in a distinctly provincial manner that reflects the vibrant cross-cultural exchange of the region.
While heavily inspired by Chinese Qing dynasty ceramics, this piece was locally produced in Java, likely in a kiln network influenced by centuries of trade and artistic transmission with China. It belongs to the category of so-called “Martaban jars”—a historical term used by traders to describe large glazed storage vessels made across the region, not limited to one geographic origin.
