gaper,  gips, 26 cm hoog, natuurgetrouwe replica van een bestaande of verdwenen gaper, 

Gapers waren herkenningstekens voor apotheken, chemisten en drogisterijen. Zij verschenen voor het eerst aan het einde van de zestiende eeuw en komen alleen voor in Nederlandse-,Friese-, en Vlaams taalgebied. De meeste die nu nog gebruikt worden als herkeningstekens stammen uit de negentiende eeuw of zijn replica's.
De gaper blijft een raadselachtig verschijnsel. De herkomst is onbekend. Voor zijn kenmerk, de wijd opengesperde mond, zijn verschillende verklaringen. Een geneeskundige; je tong laten zien voor een diagnose, en vervolgens de voorgeschreven medicijnen innemen. Sommige gapers hebben namelijk een pil op de tong of een zwavelstok in de mond. Een andere verklaring zou kunnen zijn dat de zieke, overmand door vermoeidheid zijn mond laat openvallen. De meest voorkomende gapers zijn oosterlingen met een tulband. Verder zijn er narren, politieagenten, brandweerlieden, Romeinse soldaten en zieke

Gapers zijn echte volkskunstproducten en kwamen enkel voor in Nederland en Vlaanderen
