Charming 19th-century oil painting by Dutch artist Hendrik Jacobus Scholten, known for his refined interior scenes. This piece depicts a peaceful domestic moment: a young woman reads from a Bible to an elderly lady seated near a fireplace. The composition closely matches Scholten’s well-known work “Sunday Morning” (circa 1865–1868), held by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (SK-A-1130).

The painting is signed in the lower right corner “H.J. Scholten”. Worth mentioning that there is an « n » appearing before the signature.
