Presque méconnu de son vivant, Henri Beyle (1783-1842) apparaît aujourd’hui par l’abondance, l’originalité, la valeur de son œuvre, comme un des écrivains majeurs de son époque. Lui-même avait prévu qu’il serait célèbre en 1936. Mais son audience, depuis, grâce aux savants travaux de fervents stendhaliens, n’a cessé de s’étendre. Le secret de ce succès tient peut-être pour une large part à ce bonheur d’écrire qu’on sent plus que chez nul autre écrivain dans tout ce qui sort de sa plume, allégresse née de l’alliance entre la lucidité toujours en éveil de l’intelligence et la vive sensibilité de l’âme. Il en résulte, aussi bien dans ses romans que dans ses écrits intimes ou ses autres ouvrages, une sorte d’allant très entraînant qui n’est qu’à lui. (J.-P. C.)
