il progetto KDF nasce nel 1937 su iniziativa di F. Porsche con l'appoggio dei vertici del partito, con lo scopo di diffondere l'utilitaria destinata a incrementare la motorizzazione civile. Nel 1939 fu presentata al Salone di Berlinola KDF-Wagen (Kraft Durch Freude Wagen), popolarmente nota come 'Maggiolino'
