Harvey Buchanan was a distinguished professor of art history at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio. Buchanan was trying to publish a book about Hermann but was rejected.

Hermann Hesse was a German-Swiss author, poet, and painter, born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany, and died on August 9, 1962, in Montagnola, Switzerland.

He is considered one of the most important German-language writers of the 20th century. His most famous works include:
- "Siddhartha" (1922) – a spiritual journey toward enlightenment  
- "Steppenwolf" (1927) – about the inner conflict of a modern individual  
- Narcissus and Goldmund" (1930) – contrasting intellect and sensuality  
- "The Glass Bead Game" (1943) – his final major novel, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946

His writing often explores themes like self-discovery, spirituality, individuality, and the conflict between intellect and emotion.
