Nicolas Bergasse. Considerations sur le magnetisme animal, ou sur la Théorie du monde et des êtres organisés, d’après les principes de M. Mesmer. The Hague, np, 1784.

Octavo: 149 pages in modern boards. FIRST EDITION.

This important text caused the breakup of the relations between Bergasse and Mesmer. The book is full of indiscretions and denunciations of Mesmer. Nice copy. (Caillet I, 979).

Exposition of Mesmer's cosmic system by his chief French disciple. This work played an important role in the internal schism that weakened Mesmer's movement. Bergasse, who had founded the Society of Universal Harmony, which might be called the "Mesmerist church", began to develop his own ideas on animal magnetism which Mesmer would not tolerate. The book also contains some valuable information on the financial practices of Mesmer's organization.

"This work was one of the texts that definitely separates Bergasse from Mesmer. Bergasse defends Mesmer from all the attacks to which he is the object, but he rejects some points of the doctrine of Mesmer's life and approaches the German doctor disclosed his doctrine". (Dureau, Notes bibliographiques pour servir à l'histoire du magnétisme animal p. 49). 

"Bergasse delivered lectures to the members of the Paris Society, and these lectures were distilled into the content of the present book. Bergasse and Mesmer had their disagreements and although in Considérations Bergasse vigorously defends Mesmer against all attacks, divergences of doctrine do nevertheless appear. Within a year after the publication of the book, Mesmer and Bergasse publicly ended their association" (Crabtree).

This book closes with remarks on magnetisms by the Marquis of Chastellux. The book appeared simultaneously in Paris.
