Poster reprint of Jackson Pollock / Untiled / 1948

The son of a farmer, Pollock spent his childhood in Wyoming, Arizona and California. In the end, he knew that if he could not go to Paris, an artist should at least go to New York, and there he studied at the Art Students League, where he became acquainted with the paintings of the Mexican muralists and El Greco, as well as developing his parallel career: that of an alcoholic.

He began with figurative works, but at the end of the 1930s he became interested in abstract painting, which allowed him to develop his art despite his artistic shortcomings, at least for the layman. But in 1947 something changed. The legend speaks of accidents (paint pot spilled on the canvas, splashes....) and also of direct plagiarism (we are talking about Janet Sobel, housewife and true creator of the style). In any case, Pollock “created” the so-called dripping: instead of using an easel and brushes as God intended, he placed the canvas on the floor and let the paint drip on it.

this new style. The guru of Abstract Expressionism, Clement Greenberg promoted it ad nauseam. But not only the critics... It is striking that in the middle of the Cold War the CIA financed this movement.

Pollock created large abstract canvases of vivid color, without composition of any kind, where the strokes intertwine to form a dense and compact tangle that was created automatically (this was related to surrealism).
