(*) Gustav Klimt, nacido en 1862 cerca de Viena, es uno de los grandes protagonistas del Art Nouveau, conocido también como Jugendstil. Formado en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Viena, pronto desarrolló un estilo único que combina lo figurativo y lo ornamental. Tras cofundar la Künstlercompagnie, destacó ya en 1886 en el Burgtheater. Profundamente afectado por la pérdida de su padre y de su hermano, en 1897 participó en la creación de la Secesión de Viena, que se convirtió en un referente del movimiento. Klimt expuso aquí obras audaces, antes de continuar su camino fundando en 1905 la Federación Austriaca de Artistas. Hasta su muerte en 1918, enriqueció el Art Nouveau con un estilo rico, sensual y decorativo, dejando una huella duradera en la historia del arte.
